Council Disposal Options for Textiles
Council collection
Check the named textile product rather than asking only whether textiles are collected. Clothing, filled bedding, curtains and damaged fabric can have different acceptance. A service may require a particular condition or may exclude some household textiles.
Household recycling centres
Find the centre’s published textile or other material list. A clothing collection point is not automatically suitable for a duvet, cushion or other filled product. If the item is excluded, ask the council which public route applies instead.
Preparation Checks for Textiles
Keep the product’s filling contained and identify its condition accurately. Separate rails, motors and electrical controls from the description of ordinary fabric where present. Follow the collection point’s instructions on dry presentation and packaging.
Clothing
Identify clothing separately from bedding or upholstery. Explain whether it is wearable, damaged or contaminated. A council textile scheme’s acceptance and preparation requirements matter more than a general statement that fabric is recyclable.
Shoes
Check whether the council accepts shoes and asks for them to be paired. Describe heavily damaged or contaminated footwear separately. Acceptance of clothing does not automatically confirm acceptance of every footwear material.
Bags & backpacks
Distinguish fabric bags, leather handbags, rigid cases and backpacks with electrical parts. Empty all contents and check the named textile or mixed-item route. A packaging-bag collection is not necessarily a route for a handbag.
Curtains
Describe the fabric, lining and condition, and keep rails or tracks separate. Curtains are not upholstered domestic seating under the seating-specific POPs guidance. Confirm textile acceptance rather than assuming a clothing bank takes them.
Textiles Collection Costs and Conditions
Check the confirmed route rather than assuming every textile has a free collection. Some filled or bulky fabric products can need a different service. A general textile-bank listing does not provide a price or acceptance guarantee for this item.
The linked item guides include checked acceptance and published packages where verified. A council’s furniture tariff is not confirmation that every product in this category is accepted.

Do not apply the upholstered domestic seating POPs guidance to all household fabric. The seating-specific source excludes mattresses, beds, curtains and blinds, with a separate distinction for certain small scatter cushions. The actual product and official classification matter.
