Match the product to the accepted list.
Identify the item as well as its material. Glass bottles, flat glass and ceramics are different products; plastic packaging and rigid household objects can also have different routes. A recycling symbol does not replace your council’s published list.
Use the council’s published material list for your containers. A material being recyclable does not automatically mean it is accepted in your kerbside bin.
Read the relevant official guidance ↗Use the right container and preparation.
Check which materials are collected together, how containers should be presented and any instructions for lids, liners or contamination. Do not assume the same container colours or sorting arrangements apply in another council.
When an item is not collected at the kerbside.
Look for a named public collection point or recycling-centre route. Exclusion from a recycling bin does not necessarily mean the item cannot be recycled through another confirmed service. Check the destination before adding it to a different bin.
Confirm the arrangement for your household.
The decision follows the exact item, service and address. Use the current official source to establish these points before treating an option as available:
- The actual waste: its product or material, condition, quantity and source.
- The named route: which council service, centre or designated public collection point applies.
- The service conditions: acceptance, household eligibility, any allowance or published charge.
- The practical arrangement: official presentation, access and any booking or request process.
Missing information in the hub is labelled as unverified. A current council statement should take priority when its arrangements have changed since the check date.
Find the responsible council ↗Apply the guidance to the actual item.
Item guides keep construction, varieties, public routes and checked local conditions together. Use the item’s main page instead of assuming the same requirements apply to every object in a broad waste category.
Find public disposal information for your area.
England’s regions are browsing areas, not individual waste services. The regional overview helps you explore, while your exact council and centre determine acceptance, eligibility and access.
